Angle Grinder Test: SkunkLock Carbon vs Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit Mini
Angle grinding the SkunkLock Carbon vs Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit Mini
A few points about this video:
1. The angle grinder is a mains powered 720w Makita (GA5030R) using 1mm abrasive discs
2. The test is NOT designed to replicate real life conditions. It's designed to compare the fundamental angle grinder resistance of the shackles

Unless thieves are walking around with power generators to supply mains power to give serious torque for the angle grinders then either one of these are going to be fantastic security on the street.

Where I live, they have bike upside down U's/loops planted in the ground. So by the train station, a friend of a friend had his Ebike locked there. They didn't bother with the lock they just cut through the "U" the bike and lock were attached to and took the bike! Seems like there is nowhere safe.

I have watched several videos testing bike locks. No one has actually done the tests under ALL of the following conditions. 1. Use portable grinder popular with thieves. 2. Include in the tests the time to change out blades and batteries on the portable grinders. In real life that time would add to cutting the locks. 3. Locking the bike locks in a more realistic scenario wrapping the rear wheel, frame and bike rack. 4. Additional second or third lock wrapping around front wheel, frame and bike rack. 5. Steps to take if you encounter thief while in progress.

But by introducing a load of difficult to control variables that would give a much less accurate idea of which was the most angle grinder resistant lock. Which was the point of this test.

The problem is that U-locks are often difficult to attach and many bike racks only allow you to lock the wheel. In a world with plenty of solid bike racks that allow you to attach the frame this would be very useful.

In the streets, any thief that has half a brain will not attack the lock, but whatever the lock is attached to ! With these grinder resistant locks, the weak link is no longer the lock but whatever the city provided to lock your bike to. And then they can charge the bike and its lock in a van and then take the time to cut the lock elsewhere. That's why I think comparisons between the locks are irrelevant, even the x1 is more resistant than most things the bike will be attached to. With this reasoning, I think the x1 is by far the best lock - because it's lighter and cheaper and still good enough. And it's also longer than the D1000. So you can buy and carry two of these and lock the bike to two things that will need to be cut.

I have the D1000. It’s awesome. Love that I don’t have to worry about someone cutting and stealing my bike. But, wish I would have gone with the X3. I thought the slight size difference would be insignificant, but the D1000 is just small. It means I never get to lock a wheel. And sometimes have a hard time even locking the frame. I also got the D1000 transport case, thinking I’d be able to strap it to my bike or my hip but totally not realistic. So heavy. And, I worry about the bare plastic clips wearing on my carbon frame. So, it goes in a backpack anyway.

Litelok X3 features an Abloy Sentry disc detainer lock, which requires a special tool with a specific picking tip in order to pick open the lock and a fairly experienced lock picker with fairly in-depth knowledge of the inner workings of the lock can pick it open. Hiplock D1000 features a slider lock, which only requires a thick strong paper clip and a bobby pin in order to pick open the lock and a novice lock picker with fairly basic knowledge of the inner workings of the lock can pick it open.

Let’s be honest who is going to be able to that in real life surroundings and at the angles of some bike locks? I like lock picking but something that you may think is easy in home settings rarely works so on top of that you would need to be practicing none stop in different positions. The chances of your regular thief learning all those techniques and implementing them on the street are going to be very rare

Looking at this video I still don't know why my bike wasn't stolen because I had exactly the same Kryptonite New York locking my front wheel to the bike rack and a Abus Granit X-plus 540 long shackle u-lock going around the seat-stay tubes, through the spokes of the rear wheel and around the other side of the bike rack. The thief cut through the Abus with an angle grinder at the top of the U shackle, from there it would have been easy to bend out both sides of the shackle but the thing that really puzzled me is that the thief cut through the kryptonite new york in the same position, at the very top of the u-section, realised that he wouldn't be able to bend the shackle because it was much thicker than the Abus. So he tried to make a second cut on one of the straight sections of the U shackle - maybe one or a combination of things happened. The angle grinder died or more lightly, trying to make the second cut the angle grinder slipped and slashed through the front tyre - realising that he wouldn't be able to ride the bike away he just left the bike literally seconds before I got back to the bike rack to find my bike surrounded by concerned onlookers. A very lucky escape for me, I ordered two Litelok X1s but I think it's time to get some sort of GPS tracker fitted to the bike - a Specialized Turbo Vado 5.0 SL e-bike in the city is a very tempting draw for bike thieves!

  • @TheHighAngler

As stated from various posts; if a thief wants it they WILL get it. The best solution is to 1. Force them to take time to steal it 2. Use the best lock you can afford even if it’s not angle grinder proof. Sometimes just having a good lock stops the simple opportunistic thief. 3. Keep your bike in the open where less brazen thieves will not want attention 4. Get insurance for your bike as you can’t depend on 1-3 to prevent it from being taken. And 5? Use common sense and just enjoy your bike.
